NAGASAKI — The long abandoned "Battleship Island," once a bustling coal mining settlement, will be reopened to the general public here on Wednesday.
The island, the real name of which is Hashima, lies about 4.5 kilometers west of the Nagasaki peninsula, and is about 480 meters long from north to south, and a slim 160 meters wide. Coal mining began in earnest on the island around 1890, and it was dubbed "Gunkan-jima," or "Battleship Island," because the forest of apartment blocks that rise out of the narrow island give it the appearance of a warship.
